Motorcycles of all shapes, sizes, and specialties have two things in common: they’re powerful and fun. But because of the variety, finding the right match can be difficult, and it’s easy to overlook something like a model’s ground clearance.

We here at Willamette Valley Harley-Davidson® want to help you get the perfect ride, so we’ve put together some information on motorcycle ground clearance and how to find a bike with the right measurements. What is a Motorcycle’s Ground Clearance?

If you’re not familiar, the term “ground clearance” refers to the amount of space between the bottom of the motorcycle’s chassis and the ground, usually measured in millimeters (mm). It’s best measured when the bike is parked on flat, even ground.

How Ground Clearance Impacts Your Ride

Though ground clearance can be modified, it’s always best to find a motorcycle that needs as few adjustments as possible. Consider how much ground clearance you need for the type of riding you’re doing, as well as how well you’ll fit on the motorcycle.

Benefits of Low Ground Clearance

A motorcycle with low ground clearance will often have a low center of gravity, which can improve how it handles. A motorcycle with a low center of gravity is easier to control and maneuver, which is particularly important with heavy models like cruisers.

Motorcycles that are lower to the ground also benefit from better aerodynamics. With the chassis closer to the road, there’s less air passing underneath the bike. That’s especially helpful with a bike that’s built for speed, like a sports bike, or ones built for long, steady rides like touring models.

It’s also helpful if you’re shorter than the average rider—low ground clearance usually means a bike that’s easier to mount and to load up with cargo.

Benefits of High Ground Clearance

That said, high ground clearance certainly has its place. With more space between the chassis and the ground, a motorcycle will have an easier time passing over obstacles without risking damage. On debris-strewn roads or ones with potholes, that can be helpful, but the primary benefit goes to off-road motorcycles, also called dirt bikes.

That lower risk of damage also means less chances you’ll need to perform costly repairs, and tends to come along with better suspension to make bumps less uncomfortable. Last but not least, taller-than-average riders will often be more comfortable on bikes with high ground clearance.
